Professor Kyle is our former Department Head (2000-2006) and a current Engineering Physics Advisor. His main research interests are the quark-gluon structure of hadrons, particularly the spin structure of the nucleon and the search for quark-gluon plasma, the hypothesized state of de-confined quarks and gluons which would have existed in the first few microseconds of the universe. He also has a strong interest in detector development and electronics. He is principal investigator of the experimental nuclear physics group, established by Prof. Emeritus George Burleson, which has been continuously supported by the Department of Energy since 1975. Professor Kyle has been active in experiments at:

• The High Resolution Spectrometer at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (US) The Large Acceptance Detector System at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland)
• The HERMES Collaboration at the Deutsche Elektronen Synchrotron Laboratory (Germany)
• E866 at Fermilab (US)
• He is currently a member of the PHENIX Collaboration at Brookhaven National Laboratory (US)
